TOM MCGRATH

Zach Feuer Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Tom McGrath opening November 29 and on view through January 5, 2008.

In his work, Tom McGrath substantially rethinks the genre of landscape painting.  He does not idealize the pastoral landscape, which is misaligned with present attitudes toward land use, but takes a far more objective look.  He accepts changes, setting the stage of the modern landscape so that its cracks and fissures are not only represented but are among its key distinguishing features.   In his new work, McGrath continues his exploration of the landscape but shifts from direct encounters to staged aerial views, day to night, natural light to artificial illumination, and East Coast suburbia to Southern California urban views.

A fully illustrated catalogue, with an essay by art historian Robert Hobbs and a text by Kevin Zucker, will accompany the exhibition.

Tom McGrath was born in 1978 in New Milford, Connecticut. He received his BFA from Cooper Union in 2000 and his MFA from Columbia University in 2002.  This is his third solo show at the Zach Feuer Gallery since his solo debut in 2002.  He lives and works in New York City.
