THE NEW NEW YORKERS

The last couple of years in New York have seen an influx of young, hungry dealers coming out of the woodwork to challenge the status quo. Daniel Reich, who developed his eye under the tutelage of Pat Hearn and Colin de Land, started out showing work in his tiny residential flat on West 21st; now he's launching a bona fide gallery space on Chelsea's 23rd Street. Zach Feuer's LFL Gallery is getting a fair amount of attention on both sides of the Atlantic, with a Parisian gallery swap with Emmanuel Perrotin scheduled for early next year. John Connelly, a former director at Andrea Rosen, opened John Connelly Presents in 2001, with a crew of artists that includes Dearraindrop and Asianpunkboy. Over on the Lower East Side, which is shaping up to be New York's new art epicentre. EXIT ART director Lia Gangitano has set up a non-profit gallery, Participant Inc; across Rivington Street, Mirabelle Marden (daughter of Brice) and Melissa Bent operate The Rivington Arms, organizing openings to coincide with those at Participant. On Canal Street, Michele Maccarone has left Luhring Augustine to open her own gallery, with a stable of international artists that includes Olav Westphalen and Christian Jankowski.
