LFL Gallery, founded in May 2000 by Nick Lawrence, Zach Feuer, and Russell LaMontagne, is an amibitious young gallery located in the heart of the Chelsea art district on 24th Street, across from the scene's most powerful art-dealing strip malls. The gallerists (Feuer and LaMontagne are seen here with the recently acclaimed solo painting installation by Jules de Balincourt) champion the work of eleven emerging and midcareer artists including Holly Coulis, Dana Schutz, Nuno de Campos, and, most recently, Tim Lokiec. Says Feuer, "I started when I was going to the Museum School in Boston. I was just frustrated with the art scene in Boston, it wasn't interested in young artists I knew were good just coming up. So out of frustration I began showing out of my apartment. And then I transplanted that beginning impulse when I moved to New York."
"Right now there's a large group of really talented artists out there, but I don't think you could call it a 'scene.' It's just that we've all grown up being influenced by much of the same cultural stimuli, so in a way there's a connection through shared influences. And for sure there's a lot of energy right now. Maybe that's because for so long things were so boring."
"And also there's a lot of energy from cool collectors right now; some of them are my age or a little older who, like Jeremy Berg, are spending a tenth of their income on emerging artists. And of course there are much bigger collectors who are simply very, very, excited by the young artists coming up now."
